On March 6th, 2018, Yoast SEO bug was launched but may have come with a bug. In fact, this update may have negatively impacted your rankings overall. The founder of Yoast, Joost de Valk, offered an apology towards those suffering “Panda-link problems” since the 7.0 launch.
What Went Wrong with Yoast SEO Plugin?
When the launch took place, it came with a ranking bug what Yoast likes to call “Panda-like problems”. This bug affected how image redirects are handled. Upside? The latest update did not affect all Yoast SEO plugin users.
Here’s what Yoast had to say about the technical error:
The bug was simple yet very painful: when you updated from an earlier version of Yoast SEO to Yoast SEO 7.0-7.0.2 (specifically those versions), we would not always correctly convert the setting you had for the old setting into the new one. We accidentally set the setting to ‘no’. Because we overwrote the old settings during the update, we could not revert this bug later on.
Joost de Valk Offers Personal Apology
While the founder announced the error has been corrected, it still affected many sites since March 6th.
“This post serves both as a warning and an apology. …We’re so very sorry. …we messed up. I myself, am sorry. More so than normal, because I came up with and coded this change myself…”
Understandably, Yoast SEO Users Are Upset
Another user commented she had lost thousands of dollars due to the Yoast SEO bug. She further comments on how her rankings returned since the bug fix.
Who is Affected by the Yoast SEO Bug?
Thankfully, not everyone was affected by the bug but it’s important to keep an eye on your rankings from here on out. Additionally, check your Yoast SEO Media Plugin settings.
How to Check Your Yoast SEO Media Settings
- First, select the Yoast SEO icon.
- Click the Search Appearance link
In the Search Appearance category, choose “Media.
All of your “Media & Attachment URLs” settings should be set to “Yes”. If it has been set to Yes already, then you’re fine. Update your plugin if it hasn’t already been updated and breathe easy.
What if They Were Set to No?
If you haven’t suffered any loss in rankings, then change this setting to Yes. Update the plugin and once again, breathe easy. You’re doing great!
Uh Oh! My Rankings Dropped!
If the settings were set to No and experienced drops in rankings since March 6th, then you may be suffering from the Yoast SEO bug. Change these to Yes and update the plugin. Additionally, you need to download the Yoast SEO Search Index Purge Plugin. Apply the plugin settings to repair the bug.
I Don’t Know if I Have Been Affected
Update your settings to Yes and lastly, update the plugin. From here, monitor both your traffic and rankings both for further details.
